HOW AND WHEN TO RESET

While Windows Phone devices may not be made by the same company that also developed the operating system for them, Microsoft, which makes the OS, decides the minimum hardware requirements for each Windows Phone.

Result: Most Windows Phone devices run fast and are stable. But in case you face issues with your handset, here are the steps you need to follow

  • You can switch off a Windows Phone device by pressing the Power button for a few seconds and then dragging the prompt that appears on the device to the bottom of the screen. To restart the device, press the  Power button again.
  •     You can reset the device by going to Settings > about > reset your phone. This will reset the device to its factory settings. You will, however, lose the data stored on your handset.

  •    If the device is not responding, you can do a hard reboot by simultaneously pressing the Volume Down and Power button for around 10 seconds.

If your Windows Phone handset still does not respond, try a hard reset.

  •     Press and hold the Volume down and connect the charger. You will now see an exclamation mark (!) on the screen.
  •     Then press the keys in the following order: Volume up, Volume down, Power, Volume down.
  •     The phone will reset and boot up automatically. Please note, this may take several minutes

  •     Press and hold the Volume down and Camera key. Now, press and hold the Power key
  •     When the phone vibrates, release the Power key, but continue holding the Volume down and camera key, until the phone reboots.
Now wait patiently as the device goes through the hard reset process and restarts. Ensure that you always have a backup before resetting your phone.

HOW TO BACK UP DATA

The best way to back up data on a Windows Phone is using SkyDrive, Microsoft’s cloud storage service.

To back up app settings, photos and text messages, go to Settings > backup and individually select what you want to back up. You will require a Microsoft account to back up your data on SkyDrive.

Contacts are automatically synced to your Microsoft account (Hotmail contacts) if you are using a data connection and a Microsoft ID on your phone.

You can also save your contacts to your Google account from your Windows Phone.

HOW TO RESTORE YOUR PHONE

While setting up a new Windows Phone device or an old device after a reset, select restore your phone during the process. Your phone must have a working data connection and you will have to use the Microsoft ID through which you backed up your data to Skydrive.

Unfortunately, Windows Phone 8 devices can’t be backed up to a local computer and therefore can’t be restored through it.
